Create Meaningful Change in Your Life with Identity-Based Habits

I just finished reading an article that discussed employing identity-based habits techniques to create a desired change. There is a little bit of text below and a link to the complete article which goes into more detail about the concept.

For our purposes here, I want to focus only on the couple paragraphs below. I want to approach the topic this way because there is a new method to getting what you want out of life without setting goals.

Create Meaningful Change in Your Life with Identity-Based Habits

The key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first. Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity. What you do now is a mirror image of the type of person you believe that you are (either consciously or subconsciously).

To change your behavior for good, you need to start believing new things about yourself. When you embrace a new identity it is much easier to reinvent yourself. You are starting from scratch. So you can essentially create the kind of person you want to become.

It takes practice and hard work. But, you must be willing to put forth the effort if you want to change your life for the better.

Imagine how we typically set goals. We might start by saying “I want to lose weight” or “I want to get stronger.” Forget that right now. Forget everything you think you know about setting and achieving goals as a means to self-improvement.

From now on you are no longer going to set goals. You don't have any more goals. In fact, your last goal is to not create any more goals. You are going to focus on systems.

A system is a way of doing something. For example, if you are a writer, your goal is to write a book. To complete a novel. Or a how-to manual.

The system you employ to write the book is what's going to get you where you want to go. The goal of completing the book won't help you in this regard. When you focus on the system you do not have a goal. But you will eventually get where you want to go.

The the system you use can be anything from writing 2 pages a day to writing 10 pages a day. Or even 10 pages a month. You can design any system you desire. The beauty of this approach is the more fun you make it the more likely you are to stick to the system.

Once you learn to operate from the standpoint of working a system. And not working towards a goal. You will be able to create real change in your life.

Use Story Telling to Create the Life You Want

Story telling is big right now. In fact, it's become the new buzz word after replacing social media.

The good news is you can use story telling to help you get the life you desire. Read the article below to discover how to do it.

Craft Your Own Story

Does your life differ from the life you want? Part of the work of getting from where you are to where you want to be is making real changes. But that's not the place to start.

Start by imagining the life you want. Imagine it in some detail. (Some might call this daydreaming.)

Don't get off course by imagining someone else's life — the life you'd want if your parents were billionaires, or the life you'd want if you won the lottery. Imagine your life if you were the sort of person you want to be.

Now tell the story. How would that person get from where you are now to where that person would want to be?

In my case, I wanted to be a writer. I put aside imagined lives in which I lived in a big house, drove a fast car, and owned all the latest fancy tech gadgets — which would have been possible, if I'd wanted to go on being a software engineer — and instead imagined a life where I did exactly what I wanted to do: Jump out of bed every day so I could spend a few hours writing.

Telling myself that story was a key step in making it happen. It didn't just give me a reason to save money instead of buying something; it changed me from the sort of person who bought those things into the sort of person who didn't buy those things — because he was a writer.

Tell yourself the story of who you want to be; that's how you become that person. Don't leave that power in the hands of the marketers.

Email never sent to Kaseem

I drafted the below email 3 or 4 days ago. I never sent it to Kaseem because I changed my mind. I did not want to communicate with him.

Hi Kaseem,

I hope you are well and that this email puts a smile on your face. I am writing to let you know that I sent Mary Beth an email telling her that I will do whatever she needs me to do as long as I can remain housed and get sober.

Please communicate to Mary Beth whatever it is you need me to accomplish. I cannot fight for my rights, fight to be treated fairly, and fight my addiction at the same time.
Those are battles I cannot afford to lose because I have bigger issues than I previously thought and I need the high-level of care your team provides.

Thank you for your professionalism. It didn't go unnoticed. In fact, it really meant a lot to me.

My emotions are sometimes those of a teenager so I apologize if I disrespected you or Monica in any way.

I am in no condition to attend any meetings. Please call Mary Beth.

Currently, I am trying to get into detox. Mary Beth gave me a bunch of numbers and I've been making calls.

I appreciate your consistency and high-level support

I sent the below email to my case manager, Mary Beth today. She was forgiving. She is such a professional I am so lucky to have her.

Hi Mary Beth,

As always I hope you are feeling well. I am writing for a few reasons the first of which is to let you know I called Sara to thank her for the high-level of support that CLF has been consistently providing.

I also want to apologize for yelling then disrespecting you the other day.  I'm really sorry.

You have been a catalyst for real change in my life, and I want you to know that I appreciate your consistency and high-level support.  I can't thank you enough.

Finally, I met with my P/O today to let him know I was going into a program. He asked me to give you his email address so you can send him an email to let him know which program accepts me.

His name is Yu and his email address is: Chang...

I will copy him in an email to you providing you with his email address again.

Awake for 3 Days Now After Shooting and Smoking Crystal Meth

Today is Monday. I have been awake since last Friday. I can't sleep because I did some really strong crystal meth.

I smoked some of it and the rest I shot through my veins. I haven't consumed anything since Friday, but I still feel the effects of the drug. My jaw keeps clinching and its giving me a really bad headache.

Why I do this to myself I don't know. But I do know that I am going back to rehab.

My case manager called me earlier, she gave me three phone numbers to call so that I can get into treatment. I spoke to one woman and she said they operate on a drop in only basis so I couldn't make an appointment.

At any rate, I am taking some action so I can get sober again. My life depends on it.

My Feelings After Publishing Suicide Article

A short while ago I published an article about committing suicide. Or thinking about committing suicide. I cried while I was writing that article because most of it is true.

posted from Bloggeroid

I am at the end of the road. Either I get sober or I commit suicide. This is a decision that I will make and I will follow through on shortly. It is only a matter of weeks before I have to decide so I am safe for now.

Fear of death is making its way through my body right now. It feels good. I accept this feeling. I can conquer and I can overcome the fear of dying. I am capable of committing suicide.

Why Were 2 Police Officers Murdered in Mississippi?

benchhane suspects kill 2 peace officers out of hatred, or was it simply a desire to evade arrest?

Two police officers were shot and killed in Mississippi last night.  I am wondering if the murders were simple a desire to get away from the police, or if they were committed out of hatred or out of a perceived wrong.

Before you get into this article, you should know I am a career criminal. I just want to set the record straight. I am speaking from extensive first-hand  experience that goes back to 1982.

I have been pulled-over and taken into custody by security guards and police more times than I care to count. And yes, I have been abused by officers of the law, but it was only after  I became problematic. Most of the time the officer gave me plenty of chances to behave or to follow orders.

Most police officers want to deal with suspects quickly to get them out of the way. They don't really want to arrest anyone unless the person has a bench  warrant out for his or her failure to appear in court.

Out of more than 30 years of dealing with peace officers on the street and Sheriff Deputies inside county jails.  I have experienced only one police officer that actually wanted to arrest someone simply   to go to the station.

My experience has been that 98% of the time you get treated better if you show the police officer that you are not a threat to him or her. You can do that by:

Obeying every command no matter how irrelevant or unnecessary you think it is.

Make sure your hands are visible at all times.

Do not speak unless you are spoken to at the outset.  Let the police tell you what is going on before you make a statement. You could talk yourself into jail. It is better not to speak at all until you talk to an attorney.  Trust me, heed that warning.

You do not owe the police anything. They are not your friend although they may appear friendly and use your name consistently. Make it a policy not to talk to police officers about any of your cases and you'll have a better chance at beating a case even if you are guilty.

Lastly, when you respond to a question by a police officer, say yes sir, and no sir.  If you respect the police they will respect you.

Rehab Instead of Suicide - What a Decision to Make

Rehab or Suicide

Decisions Decisions

Lately, I have been seriously thinking about committing suicide.  I am almost to the point where I'm ready to set a date to end my life.

I refuse to live the life of a drug addict anymore.  If the only way to stop being an addict is to die, then I am ready to die.

What scares me the most is that it feels like a strong resolve.   I am totally serious.  I have felt this strong resolve in the past and I usually got what I wanted.

I'm beginning to visualize my corpse laying on my bed and someone coming inside the room to discover my body.

Don't overlook the melodrama because you are playing a part.

It is different this time.

In the past, when I thought of committing suicide, I'd laugh it off because I knew that I could not do it. It was not something that I would do.

When I think of suicide now... I am thinking that I CAN do it, my thoughts are that it is something I CAN do.  I can actually carry it out.  I have overcome the fear of death, in fact, I welcome death.

I made a decision long ago to kill myself if there ever came a time when I could not get off drugs. I never want to be a crazy homeless person again. I refuse to live that way and I do not want to get old.  So, by committing suicide, I am actually solving two problems at once.

I am sure that suicide is the easiest way out of my problems because when I die, all of my problems die with me. Nothing matters anymore. Nothing was ever that important because everything was freely given to me.

I was loved by many people and didn't even know it.  I didn't have a clue how important I was to other people.

I am so tired being at my addiction's beck and call.  Addiction doesn't know anything about morals or right and wrong. It just doesn't care about anything but getting high.

It is so powerful!

It controls me completely. When I use drugs my  only priority in life is to make sure my addiction is happy.

It is the only thing that matters regardless of what has to happen.

No matter how I have to behave or

what I have to do,

if I have a craving for drugs.

I WILL get a fix.

The funny part is that the addiction is trying to kill me.  And I allow it.   I pay for it. I search it out and encourage it.

It's been trying to kill me for more than three decades. I've had so many head injuries that I get really bad migraine  headaches a few times a week. And I have been in and out of jails and prisons so many times, I think I am institutionalized.  I think I am institutionalized because I cannot take care of myself on any level.

I'm not going to let my addiction kill me. I have one fight left.

Getting High Almost Every Day Now

Do I Choose Life or Death?

I have started using drugs almost everyday now.  When I first relapsed I was using only once or twice a week. It didn't take long for me to begin using every day, and now I'm back where I was before I went into rehab.

Using drugs takes the life out of you very quickly. The biggest  problem is it's too hard to stop once  you begin using.  You know what I mean if you're an addict. You say to yourself, I'm not going to use today, and the next thing you know you're going to the drug dealer, you're purchasing drugs, and then you are consuming the drugs.

The bottom line is that drugs lead to an extremely unsatisfying life.  In all aspects. You eventually become unhappy with your partner, you become unhappy with your job, you become angry easily, and you hate the way you live.  Many addicts  become unhappy with the people around them so they create conflict in order to escape those people.  County jail inmates are 80 percent to 90 percent drug addicts.  I know, I have been in and out of prison most of my adult life.

In the previous post on this blog, I wrote about how I was going back to rehab for 90 days. I have a meeting later today with my case manager in which we are going to talk about finding a rehab that is suitable for me and a good match for my needs.

Finding the right rehab is extremely important.  I was discharged early from one of the last rehab facilities I was in because it was not a good match.  I did not get a long with the counselors because they kept forcing me to do things I could not do because of health issues.

I am sure I am going to remain sober when I am discharged from the facility I'm going to. I have been in approximately 13 rehab facilities so I know  first-hand that if I am going to stay sober it is going to be up to me.

As you sober?

Going Back to Rehab Soon for 90 Days

Hello! I hope you are doing well as you read this quick note. As the title suggests, I am going back to rehab for another 90 days.  It's no secret that I relapsed, so I'm not surprised that my housing case manager want me to go back.

Please ignore this number:

I read the text below and decided to share it here. It's Italian opening stuff. It can be interesting depending on how long you allow yourself to ponder the thoughts, etc cetera.

Difference Between Goals and Systems

What’s the difference between goals and systems?

If you’re a coach, your goal is to win a championship. Your system is what your team does at practice each day.If you’re a writer, your goal is to write a book. Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week.If you’re a runner, your goal is to run a marathon. Your system is your training schedule for the month. If you’re an entrepreneur, your goal is to build a million dollar business. Your system is your sales and marketing process.

Now for the really interesting question:

If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get results?

I know my life would look a lot different if I adopted this method of not really focusing on goals, but focusing on systems and processes. It's a great way to look at life and it's also great way to begin to change limiting beliefs, negative thoughts and these negative thoughts cycles the team to play ghost from time to time.
